Dr. Mehrdad Favagehi received his undergraduate and dental education in Virginia: George Mason University (B.S. Biology 1990), Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University D.D.S. 1994. He earned a specialty certificate in Periodontics and a M.S. degree (Oral Biology) at the Ohio State University in 1997.
He has received a mentorship/teaching award from the American Academy of Periodontology (2011) in recognition for teaching as a an adjunct faculty of Periodontics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry since 1998. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.
Dr. Favagehi received a research award from the Ohio State University College of Dentistry for his research involving wound healing. His research showed how psychological stress delays oral wound healing by suppressing the immune system and modulating pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1 (Psychoneuroimmunology). His research is published in a book titled: Stress Delays Oral Wound Healing (1997 OSU press) and in Psychosomatic Medicine (1998).
In the past decade, Dr. Favagehi has served in the Research Submissions Committees of the American Academy of Periodontology and Academy of Osseointegration. He's currently the Chairman of the Research Committee - Academy of Osseointegration.
Dr. Favagehi practices periodontics and implantology with his wife, Dr. Lourdes Ann Christopher who is also a Periodontist. Their practice has been recognized as one of the "BEST" or "TOP" practices by numerous surveys of local dentists conducted by the WASHINGTONIAN, VIRGINIA LIVING and NORTHERN VIRGINIA magazines. Drs. Christopher & Favagehi have incorporated modern technology such as Cone Beam CT scan technology, lasers and growth factors such as L-PRF in their practice.
Dr. Favagehi has lectured nationally and internationally covering subjects related to periodontics, bone regeneration, laser surgery, wound healing and implantology.
He has lectured at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP2014, AAP2016), the annual meeting of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons (AOMFS 2015), and International Association for Dental Research (IADR 1997) and many other surgical meetings and conferences.
